There are so many ways to go about gain staging and so many ways for people to get confused how best to do it. Tried many ways myself, love using a VU meter but now I found this https://www.hornetplugins.com/plugins/hornet-vu-meter-mk3/ It's plain set it and forget it. Load all your tracks or stems, add the hornet vu meter as first insert on every track/stem, click arrow max peak set to -12, click gain, click auto, playback loudest part of mix for at least 1 minute and viola gainstaging done! Couldn't be easier than that and fool proof too.

Brian Fields says:

Love , love, LOVE the idea of making that final audio track from the Master and printing tracks as you go along for comparison.

Roger Clemens says:

How did you print a layer?

Mister Bones says:

I’ve always had an issue with the “gain staging” part of a mix, and here’s why. Before even moving a fader inside of any daw, the audio source comes with a volume by default depending on how it was recorded or made inside of a plugin (virtual instrument) so my issue is that it does not matter how low you put a fader down, this won’t change the way a plugin reacts when engage (meaning) I find myself going straight to the audio source and changing the volume there first, before even moving any fader on the mixer. Every daw works different when it comes to this. But for my taste and what I’m looking for in any of my mixes. I’m always manipulating the volume of any source directly, before moving the faders. There’s more headroom inside the plugins to work with and you can achieve a better sound.

Robot Robsen says:

Hey Joe i thank you so much for doing this. i'ts truly inspiring. I do some little homerecording myself, and i truly evolved in my mixes because of you. you're videos are the first thing i'm looking for as soon as i get home from work. 😉

greetings from germany 😉

Will Stinger says:

Thanks man. Just wanted to say this.

Joao Henrique says:

Joe, why you don't use the clip gain and level meter ?… Any reason for that ?…Thanks !……..
